Why do I call this door 'Waiting'? Because, in my opinion, it is..

Waiting to be looked after...

Waiting to feel Regal.

Waiting to be cleaned, painted and polished.

Waiting to be beautiful and to be noticed...once again.

Oh! And waiting for wonderful, old door handles!

(The above handle is actually plastic!)

Sad Door Saturday

Now this is wrong...JUST PLAIN WRONG!! How could a reasonably nice door become THIS??? It looks to me like the SPCD* should be called in right away on this poor thing!!

*SPCD - the unfortunately non-existent 'Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Doors'. For previous examples of doors needing the SPCD's help, please see SPCD in the side bar.

Sad Door Saturday

OK, so this door isn't nearly as sad as some I have shown you and it is far, far, far from the more lavish and lovely doors you have seen here, nevertheless, this door is sad, but it's not that bad!! What is sad is that it probably hasn't been given any attention in a long time AND it looks as if it when it was given attention, it was to add another layer of paint to the old layers. If you look at this old door and imagine all the paint stripped away, cleaned up and a new layer of nice paint (green, for example), it could be quite a sweet little door. What do you think? I think yes...I like this simple little door...it just needs some good ol' TLC!!

Saturday/Sunday Door

Saturday/Sunday Door? What kind of door is that? Well, normally, on Saturday I show you a 'Sad' Door and on Sunday, I show you a church door...well, today, since I have a million things to do in our garden (while the weather is FANTASTIC), I'm doing a double post: a 'Sad Church Door' (yes, this was a side door).

Can you imagine the sadness this poor door feels for not being a door anymore? OK, so the door itself is no longer there, but it once was and the frame is still there...waiting. Just like the angels that are still watching over over it. Watching and waiting. And waiting...for someone to go through a door that isn't there.

Saturday Makeover

Normally, on Saturdays I show you a 'sad' door. Well, today I have the pleasure of showing you a door 'makeover'. One day when I was out hunting doors, I came across a door that was clearly in the process of being renovated so I took a picture of it with the idea of coming back a few weeks later to take an 'after' shot of the same door.

Here is what I found on 17 March 2010.

And this is what it looked like when I saw it on 20 May 2010.

Here is a detail of the keyhole plate before the renovation (during the renovation it was removed and was not put back).

Here is a close-up of one of the round windows after renovation.

I hate to do it, but I have to complain about something...when they renovated this wood door, they re-varnished and repainted it to LOOK like wood, but IT IS WOOD!! I have seen this before and I just don't understand WHY this is done. The paint chips off after a while and it doesn't look nice...at least a natural wood finish is honest!!

This once-was-nice door hides on a little back street and you will find it only if you know of a short-cut through a certain passageway that is not used very often and is rather off the beaten path. (Note: there are thousands of 'passages' in this city...created, I believe, so that a person doesn't have to walk around a block, but, rather, can walk 'through' it!) Perhaps because of this not-so-obvious location, this poor door has taken more than it's share of abuse. But then again, the entire building this door is attached to is clearly unloved so it only goes with the territory I suppose. Sad. Skoda (the Czech word for 'too bad').

Sad Doors Everyday

Sad doors. They are everywhere. Here, finally, is proof that I'm not the only one who notices them. As you can see, someone posted a flyer on a sad door advertising their services for turning sad doors back to happy doors! Can this be the doings of the door angels we asked for?

Spring is here, the weather is lovely, everyone is smiling...but this sad door. Not even the two faces on this door look very happy. Honestly though, just a little work and this door could once again be happy and smiling. I really do not understand the need of some people to deface doors and walls...or anything!! Are there not any door angels out there to protect these innocent doors from angry, heartless people? Please come forward if you are out there!!

At least the pretty door handle has remained intact!

So maybe this doesn't look terribly sad at first sight, but look closer (click on the picture)...pretty sad, isn't it? Not just has the door been scratched and banged up badly, but dozens of things have been stuck and glued to it then scratched off...or not. And the final insult is the horrible handle. Poor door...can you hear it whimpering?

Joyless and Sad. Yep...that's what the J and S in the windows must stand for. Oh what a poor, sad, sad door. What on earth did it do to deserve such awful treatment? I think I hear it whimpering...can someone please call the SPCD*?

Sad, but Kind of Funny Door Saturday

I saw this and just had to photograph it though I'm not really sure it counts as a door like the others do. I don't quite know where it goes or what it is for, but it does have a handle, a lock and so forth so it counts as a door. I like the flower decorations on it and for once, the fact that it is really quite small...I think even I might have to stoop to walk through it! It is awfully sad though...definitely a case for the S.P.C.D. And that eye-sore of an extension cord (?) above it?? What is that??

Note: I am in Switzerland now (I have pre-posted this) for a week and will try to keep posting while here, but please forgive me if I miss a day. I do have a stock of photos to use so that isn't the problem...finding the time to post is. I will be back!!

Sad Door Saturday

And here we are again...Saturday, the day that we all love (well, most of us love it , I think!) and the day I have dedicated to doors that deserve some love.

Today's door is, in my opinion, spectacular. When first looking at the pictures of this door, one might think that it were it not for the spray paint on it, this door wouldn't be so sad. Unfortunately, the building around this door is also sad...closed and empty shops, more spray painted walls and windows, few inhabitants, etc. I know, I find it hard to believe, too and I don't understand why this building is like it is especially considering that there are other buildings around it that look fine. I would like to believe that if it were up to this door the whole building would be alive with happiness and good and creativity, but unfortunately, this poor door, despite it's size (it is quite huge!), just doesn't have the power to change those things...the only thing that could make a difference is love. Maybe some day. I hope.

Another Sad Door Saturday, but unlike last week's door and the week before that, this door isn't so sad looking (though if I caught the delinquents that 'saddened' this door THEY would be sad!!). This door has many happy elements including the repeating motif across the door's top and bottom; the uniquely-shaped windows; the diamond-shaped window panes above the door; and the really nice frame which not only has a repeating floral motif, but two ladies heads there on each side of the door just waiting to welcome everyone who passes by (too bad they don't have the power to fight off the people who saddened this door!). This slightly sad door deserves to be happy again AND some respect...and maybe a new and more interesting handle!!

Ah, yes...once again it is Sad Door Saturday. While there are so many lovely doors in Prague, there are also countless sad ones. What you are looking at here is just another poor, sad door that deserves an intervention from the (non-existent) Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Doors (SPCD). Seriously, can you imagine the humiliation it must feel..not only has it been so thoughtlessly defaced, it's grip on life has been taken away from it as well!

Ahhh...it's Saturday. I hope as you are reading this you are in the company of a nice cup of java or tea (as you prefer) and that you have your feet up.

Here at The Door Hunter, I've decided to dedicate Saturdays to 'sad' doors because sad doors need to be noticed and loved too. Today's sad door is truly sad. Actually, I think I can hear it whimpering every time I go by it. Poor, poor little door. It has such potential, but it is so abused and unloved...If there was a Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Doors, I'd be on the phone right away trying to get help for this little door. But since there isn't, I will just have to hope that one day someone will love it for it's beauty and take care of it...afterall, it was once loved and decorated...

...now it is badly mistreated...and badly handled. Poor, sad door.

Sad Door Saturday

What a poor, old, sad door!! But it does have something to be happy about... it is one of the few doors that I have come across that is not on a busy street! In fact, when I want to take a nice, calming walk, this door is on my route because it is in a peaceful and inviting neighborhood. I have been by this door in every season and under all weather conditions and a couple of times I have even been lucky enough to have seen it when the door was slightly open so I can tell you that it leads directly into a courtyard. (FYI: All the doors I have shown here until today either open into a long hallway/corridor or directly into the building itself.) My imagination wants me to believe that there might even be a horse or two living behind this door!

I know I've said it before about another door, but I have a special place in my heart for this door, unfortunately, I think it's owner doesn't. I will continue to visit it...maybe some day I will discover that its owner has finally decided to give it the love and care that it deserves. If such is the case, I'll be sure to let you know.
